FANTASY FOOTBALL WEEK 3
BENCH/START WRAP-UP
September 26, 2006
Week 3 was an exciting week in the NFL once again. This week we really tried to help out those teams that needed a fill in for the week 3 byes. We hooked you up with nice substitutions like Greg Jennings, Brett Favre, and John Kitna. We did get shocked by a couple of Saints, but so did the Falcons. Without further adieu, join us for a look back at our week 2 Bench/ Start performance.
Nostradamus (a.k.a. psychic)
Start:
Greg Jennings, WR, GB – Three receptions isn’t typically a good start call, but when you take Brett Favre’s 400th TD pass to the house from 75 yards out … you had a great game. Never mind the fact that the defender was held down the field that allowed this TD and never mind that the Lions poor tackling is an embarrassment to even powder-puff football. Just read that bottom line of 101 yards and a 75 yard TD reception. If you were able to benefit from this start, pat yourself on the back. If you were beaten by this great performance we feel your pain.
Jon Kitna, QB, DET – Kitna had been a wet fish so far in the season. We thought he had a good matchup this week and we told you to start him. Kitna did not disappoint. He rolled up the most passing yards of the weekend and he threw two long TD strikes. Kita was a great start this week. We hope you enjoyed the ride. Defenses don’t get much easier than the Packers.
Brett Favre, QB, GB – Kitna had a big game and Favre was right behind. What is perhaps more impressive than his 3 TDs and 340 yards is that fact that he threw ZERO INTs. This is a scary Favre when he plays like this. Don’t get too excited, but there might be room on your bench for Favre in a pinch. Favre was a great start recommendation in week 3.
Frank Gore, RB, SF – Despite the fact that he fumbled and he left the game early and let his backup grab 2 TDs, Gore still had a nice game. He almost got 75 yards of offense, but his gaudy 6 receptions really set him apart. Let’s hope Gore doesn’t miss any time because he is a fantasy force right now (All hail Norv Turner).
Willis McGahee, RB, BUF – McGahee didn’t let us down this week as he rolled up 150 yards rushing. We would have liked to have seen a TD, but 150 is nothing to scoff at. McGahee was a solid start week 3.
Roy Williams, WR, DET – Prior to week 3, Roy Williams had been a whole lot of talk and very little action. We told you “He has been held scoreless the first two weeks, and we think that this streak will end against the Packers.” As if Williams was reading from our cue card, he scored this week with a pretty 42 yard bomb. On top of this nice catch, Williams had 7 receptions for 138 yards. Williams made a lot of fantasy owners so happy week 3.
Santana Moss, WR, WAS – We would have liked to have seen more from Moss, but his yardage and gaudy 6 receptions made Moss a reasonable start in point per reception leagues.
Ronnie Brown, RB, MIA – Brown broke 100 total yards. It wasn’t a bad week from this slow starting sophomore at all.
Chris Chambers, WR, MIA – This call is right on the border of a so-so call, but we will let chambers slide. His 39 yards on the ground and 4 receptions add to his receiving yardage totals and make him a reasonable start.
Bench:
Reuben Droughns, RB, CLE – Droughns didn’t even play, so leaving him out of your plans was a great plan.
Brandon Stokely, WR, IND – Here is another late scratch from the game. Hopefully you are watching for last minute updates on Sundays. If you aren’t this was a good bench call way in advance.
Dominic Rhodes, RB, IND – Rhodes had a rough game. He had no receptions and no TDs. His 48 yards just don’t get it done for us. He was a great bench call.
Farmer's Almanac (a.k.a. not so bad/not so good)
Start:
Kurt Warner, QB, ARZ – Warner managed to give Boldin and Fitzgerald solid games, but his performance wasn’t all that exciting. Mainly, his 2 turnovers helped to hinder his week 3 value.
Bench:
None this week
Weather Forecast (a.k.a. oops better luck next time)
Start:
Corey Dillon, RB, NE – Dillon was injured and as a result his game ended up being very lackluster.
Warrick Dunn, RB, ATL – We will get to this Saints game in a minute, but Dunn just didn’t do enough to make it into our so-so calls. He was close, but not there.
Bench:
Charlie Frye, QB, CLE – Charlie Frye seemed to be playing this past week like he was offended by our bench call. He dropped over 300 yards of offense on is a 2 TDs. OUCH! We are left chanting “Charlie, Charlie, Charlie” much like those fans in Cleveland. Good for Cleveland. BAD for our bench call.
Amani Toomer, WR, NYG – Tommer scored a TD and that will often bust a bench call. It did this week in the case of Toomer.
Bernard Berrian WR, CHI – Berrian didn’t score, but he did have a nice reception total and 70 yards receiving. That is just enough to bust up our bench call.
Marques Colston, WR, NO and Deuce McAllister, RB, NO – Much like the Falcons on Monday Night, we got ambushed by the Saints. It was nice to see football back in New Orleans but it came at a high price for our Saints bench call. That blocked punt changed the WHOLE game. From there it was going to be hard for the Saints to lose.
