FANTASY FOOTBALL WEEK 2
BENCH/START WRAP-UP
September 19, 2006
Week 2 was another wild one as we start to see the new order of
the NFL for 2006. Only time will tell who are the contenders,
but in the meantime, join us for a look back at our week 2 Bench
/ Start performance. While we had a lot of good predictions this
week, there were two NFL players that stuck it to us.
Nostradamus (a.k.a. psychic)
Start:
Frank Gore, RB, SF – Gore was a beast once again. He scored another TD and he had 137 yards of total offense. Gore was a fantastic start call once again.
Buffalo Bills Defense – Even without Takeo Spikes, the Bills posted another great game. The defense only allowed 6 points while they added 1 INT and 6 Sacks. This type of performance is a good start in most scoring formats. Hopefully you got to take advantage of this solid start.
Corey Dillon, RB, NE – Dillon had 80 rushing and a TD. That is a good start in almost all formats. The rookie Laurence Maroney continues to see significant time, but Dillon still has a spot at the goal line and he continues to be a fantasy factor.
Roy Williams, WR, DET – Williams ended up being a good start call in point per reception leagues. He will get better, but he needs to do a little less talking and a lot more playing. The Bears are a tough D, so you should expect improved performances from Williams as the season goes along.
Ahman Green, RB, GRB – Green was a decent start in non point per reception leagues and he was a great start in point per reception leagues. Green had 6 receptions and good total yardage.
Dominic Rhodes, RB, IND – Rhodes is another RB that is splitting time with a rookie, but he is still producing. Rhodes scored this week and he continues to contribute to many fantasy teams that took a flyer on this veteran in drafts.
Isaac Bruce, WR, STL – Bruce didn’t score, but he had solid point totals in leagues that award points for receptions. 5 receptions is a very solid effort. We told you that Bruce was a sneaky start in deep leagues and fulfilled his end of the bargain.
Chester Taylor, RB, MIN – Taylor had another great game. He didn’t score this week, but he did have nearly 130 yards of total offense. Taylor is looking like a great steal from drafts. All you have to hope for now is that he can stay healthy.
Bench:
Any Raiders’ QB – This was a slam dunk. Andrew Walter managed about 0.4 points in standard leagues and Brooks wrapped up a perfect 0 yards and 2 fumbles before being knocked out of the game. If doesn’t get much better than that for a bench call.
Eddie Kennison, WR, KC – With only 2 catches for 39 yards, Kennison made for a great bench call.
Michael Jenkins, WR, ATL – After a huge week 1, Jenkins ended up being a big bust week 2. He only had 2 catches for 14 yards. Yuck. He was a good bench call.
Charlie Batch, QB, PIT – Batch ended up not playing, but Roethlisberger didn’t fair very well in the Steelers’ loss. He only had 141 yards and 2 INTs. It was a good week to sit down the QB for the Steelers.
Farmer's Almanac (a.k.a. not so bad/not so good)
Start:
Matt Hasselbeck, QB, SEA – Hasselbeck had a so-so game. It would have been a good start call if he wouldn’t have tossed 2 INTs. Hang in there with Hasselbeck because he will eventually turn it around.
Jamal Lewis, RB, BAL – Lewis had a so-so game. He didn’t score, but he did get a sizable number of carries. We really expected much more from Lewis. However, he certainly wasn’t bad enough to kill you.
San Diego Chargers Defense – If you get points for margin of victory, you really racked up here as the Chargers beat the Titans 40 to 7. However, most leagues don’t award for this. Despite this impressive win, the Chargers only had a so-so game. Only 7 points allowed is great, but only 2 sacks is a bit of a let down. Again, this is almost a solid call, but we are going to dump the Chargers at so-so b/c they needed to make more happen.
Bench:
Chris Simms, QB, TAM – Simms had great yardage, but his 3 INTs and 0 TDs made him a so-so start.
Any Titans QB – Vince Young scored a meaningless TD to make this a so-so call. If you started Kerry Collins, you wish you didn’t because he scored a negative total in most leagues.
Eric Moulds, WR, HOU – We are going to let Moulds sneak into the so-so calls. He only had 59 yards, but his receptions make him a reasonable start in reception leagues
Weather Forecast (a.k.a. oops better luck next time)
Start:
Tony Gonzalez, TE, KC – Gonzalez was a bust. You should probably consider looking for other options if you have them while things settle out in KC. However, he is a tight end and low point totals come with the territory from time to time.
Bench:
Joey Galloway, WR, TAM – Overall we had a great week picking bench players, but we had a couple of our bench guys shove it in our faces. Galloway had a big time game with over 150 yards receiving. He was a busted bench call.
Laveranues Coles, WR, NYJ – Coles was the other fellow who smashed our bench call. Other than these guys, it was a solid week for the Docs.
