Wrap Up of FootballDocs Bench / Start

It's Tuesday, and that means it is time to face the music and/or toot our horn as we do a wrap-up on our advice--both good and bad.  In fact, every wrap-up is kept and posted below as a permanent public record of what we called and how good or bad the calls were.  Why?

Three reasons:

1.  Accountability.
2.  Confidence in our analysis and recommendations.
3.  Because the Docs take winning every bit as seriously as you do.

Thank you for visiting and welcome to FootballDocs Fantasy Football--"Where the geeks meet the gridiron."

FANTASY FOOTBALL WEEK 14
BENCH/START WRAP-UP

December 14, 2004

Week 14 was a great week for playoff fantasy football.   Hopefully, you didn’t end up on the wrong side of the Drew Bennett experience.   We made some great calls again for week 14.   Torry Holt is heating up, the Jags D blew up on the Bears, Chester Taylor still got his numbers, and Onterrio Smith is carrying the load for the Vikings.   Enjoy the weekly bench / start wrap up.   Join us for the weekly fantasy bench/start wrap up as we take credit for our good predictions and own up to our blunders of the week.

Nostradamus (a.k.a. psychic)
Start:
Torry Holt – We told you that Chris Chandler and Torry Holt had something special going on.   Holt had another solid week.   He amassed 151 yards and a touchdown.   This is the type of thing that Holt owners would like to see continue.   We are concerned about Chandler’s INTs, but if you own Holt at this point in the season you will just have to hope for the best and start him down the stretch.

Denver Broncos Defense – We were hoping for a bigger game from the Broncos against the Dolphins, but we still got a solid performance out of this fantasy D.   The Broncos only allowed 17 points. They also had 1 interception and 4 sacks.   In most fantasy scoring systems, the Broncos were a decent start week 14.

Julius Jones – Jones didn’t give you another 3 TD game, but he did have a solid fantasy performance.   His 96 total yards and a touchdown are a very solid game from any fantasy running back.   We would have liked it better if he hadn’t fumbled the ball, but he still made us proud.

Nick Goings – Goings has been possibly the best running back acquisition down the stretch this year.   He had another 100+ yard game and a touchdown.

Chester Taylor – Even though they named Jamal Lewis the starter for Sunday, Taylor still got his yardage.   He had over 100 yards on the ground and an additional 27 yards receiving.

Jacksonville Jaguars Defense – The Jags were on of the best fantasy defenses to start this past weekend.   The Jags hadn’t even approached the level of domination they displayed on Sunday.   Jacksonville only allowed 3 points.   In the high dollar categories, the Jags really excelled.   They had 1 interception, 5 sacks, 1 fumble recovery, and even a safety.   You couldn’t have done much better than the Jags.   We hope that you started them.

Onterrio Smith – Fantasy owners that held onto Smith throughout his suspension now have a serviceable back to use in the fantasy playoffs.   Smith had nearly 100 yards of total offense and a touchdown.   Smith should continue to be a solid RB down the stretch.

Willis McGahee – McGahee is looking like the mega TD machine he was at the University of Miami.   McGahee’s onslaught of TDs continued this week when he scored twice.   McGahee also had 117 yards of total offense.   McGahee is starting to make a strong case for being any fantasy team’s keeper.

Bench:
Eli Manning – Let’s just say that it is now safe to stay far, far away from starting Eli Manning.   He only had 27 yards passing and he turned the ball over 3 times.   Benching Manning was a very good call week 14.

Amani Toomer – As we expected, the struggling Manning continues to hurt Toomer’s numbers.   Only 53 yards for Toomer on two catches.   If you left Toomer on the pine, it was a great call.   Unless Warner returns, we don’t expect to see any fantasy future for Toomer this season.   Even if Warner does return, Toomer probably won’t be worth having unless you are in a very deep league.

William Green – Green pulled off a feat on Sunday that is very tough for a running back to do.   He scored NEGATIVE fantasy points in most scoring systems.   He had 11 rushes for 5 yards and a fumble.   Pretty sad numbers and a good call for the bench in week 14.

Chad Pennington – Pennigton was another great call by us in week 14.   He only had 189 yards passing and NO TDs.   This isn’t too bad unless you consider the 3 interceptions that he threw.   This was a very un-Pennington-like performance.   He is obviously still recovering from his injuries.

Any Dolphins QB – The best Dolphins’ QB only had 170 yards passing with 1 TD and 1 INT.   This is the type of performance that most fantasy teams are glad to have on the bench.

Farmer's Almanac (a.k.a. not so bad/not so good)
Start:
None this week.

Bench:
None this week.

Weather Forecast (a.k.a. oops better luck next time)
Start:
Jerry Porter –The Raiders got abused by the Falcons.   Starting Porter is a risk any week and you probably won’t see his name in our start section again this season.

Arizona Cardinals Defense – The Cardinals were set up perfectly for a big game, but they blew it with only 1 sack and 1 fumble recovery.   In leagues where points against is a factor, the 31 points that they gave up probably left you very disappointed with the Cardinals.

Kerry Collins – Collins and the Raiders were pummeled by the Falcons.   Collins did have several good games coming into this one, but he had very little success week 14.

Bench:
Eric Parker – Parker toasted us with one play.   His 79 yard TD reception made a good game all by itself and it busts up our call to bench him week 14.
