FANTASY FOOTBALL WEEK 10
BENCH/START WRAP-UP
November 16, 2004
Week 10 was another solid week for the Docs’ predictions. We brought out the sleepers this week like Derrick Blaylock and Kevan Barlow, but we also brought out the dead with start calls on David Garrard. Drew Bledsoe and Peerless Price were busts as predicted. Someone should get those two back together. Neither of them has been worth much of anything since they split. Price may eventually rebound from the fantasy slums, but we don’t know about Bledsoe.
Nostradamus (a.k.a. psychic)
Start:
Derrick Blaylock – We told you early in the week to lock and load Blaylock this week. Hopefully you followed that advice. Blaylock had a monster day. 186 yards rushing and a TD on the ground made for a great day. Blaylock added another 38 yards receiving to make his week a smashing success. If you snaked Blaylock off the waivers in your league, good work. If you had Blaylock as your handcuff to Holmes, you now truly understand the value of being prepared.
David Garrard – We are going to have to stick our chests out a little further for this one. Garrard was making his first start of the year in relief for Leftwich. We told you to give him the rock and … well lets just say this was the call of the week if you needed someone to fill in for your bye week. 198 yards passing, 42 yards rushing, no interceptions, and 2 TDs. That is one heck of a day from a guy coming off the bench for his first game of the year. Keep and eye on this guy. If the team is reluctant to get Leftwich back in the game (which they may considering they have dedicated themselves to him), Garrard may become a decent fantasy backup for the rest of this season.
Aaron Brooks – Brooks had a great day just as we expected. With 259 yards passing and a 42 yards TD bomb, you couldn’t ask for much more. However, Brooks did give you more on the ground. A rushing TD. In most leagues, rushing/receiving TDs are worth more than passing TDs, so you had to be happy with the results of starting Brooks.
Kevan Barlow – Barlow had a solid game for us against the Panthers in week 10. We had a strong feeling that the Panthers would welcome him into the end zone with open arms. They did. In fact they liked his first trip to the end zone that they invited him back for another visit. 2 TDs and a handful for yards is a solid performance for this up and down back. If you started him, you were most likely pleased.
Trent Green – Green threw for over 300 yards and tossed 1 TD in his week 10 effort against the Saints. We would have liked to see a few less turnovers, but Green was very serviceable in most leagues. Starting him wouldn’t have been a bad call in most of the leagues that give bonuses for reaching that 300 yard passing mark.
Joe Horn – Week 9 Horn had 21 yards receiving. We told you to brush your shoulders off and get back on this horse for another ride. If you did, you were rewarded with 167 yards and a 42 yard TD strike. A great week from a player that was in a little bit of a slump.
Onterrio Smith – Another good performance form Smith. We hoped for more from him, but Tice is playing with our fantasy minds again by giving Michael Bennett and Moe Williams touches. Smith had a goal line carry for a TD and some yardage to tack onto that fantasy total. He was the best choice out of the Minnesota backs, but things could get even more hairy in MIN before this season is through.
Bench:
Drew Bledsoe – As predicted, Bledsoe got lit by the Patriots D again. In many scoring systems he put up a negative fantasy score this week. We don’t know what is wrong with Bledsoe, but he hasn’t been the same since he got crushed a few years ago and missed several games. He has no business being on most fantasy teams. Bledsoe should never be drafted in most leagues.
Peerless Price – Only two catches for 20 yards. The Falcons won and Price will still have a few good fantasy games, but it looks like those games will be few and far between this season. Leaving Price on your bench was a good call this week.
Thomas Jones – Early on in the week, we told you to not even think about starting Jones. He didn’t play again this week, so we will claim half credit for that call. A zero is a zero in your fantasy lineup whether the guy played or not. Jones owners will be keeping their fingers crossed for his return soon.
Mewelde Moore – Moore is another guy who didn’t play this week. Things don’t look good for Moore, but there is a bright side. All of the MIN RBs looked pretty bad last week. If you are hoping Moore, might return to be a factor, there is still hope.
Farmer's Almanac (a.k.a. not so bad/not so good)
Start:
Michael Pittman –We would have liked to have seen Pittman score this week, but his 4 receptions and 78 total yards made him a so-so start. The return of key defensive players significantly improved the Falcons defense.
Bench:
Santana Moss – Moss had a middle of the pack game with his yardage. He didn’t score, so he wouldn’t have really hurt or helped your team this week.
Kevin Jones – Jones had one of his best rushing games of the year, but he still didn’t knock our socks off. He didn’t get in the end zone and he wasn’t very involved in the passing game. A so-so prediction on Benching Jones this week.
T.J. Houshmandzadeh – Houch, had a mediocre game with 59 yards and no TDs. We give him enough credit to make it out of our correct bench calls of the week, but his fantasy performance was so-so at best.
Weather Forecast (a.k.a. oops better luck next time)
Start:
Josh McCown – McCown let us down a little bit this week with small yardage numbers. He managed to still not throw a pick, but his lack of TDs this week made him a less than desirable start.
David Carr – Carr turned the ball over 4 times and two of them were for scores. His team got down and he went under with the ship. A bad week to look Carr’s way.
Bench:
Brandon Lloyd – Lloyd busted us up with a solid performance. 62 yards and a TD is a blow call by us in week 10.
