NFL Week 7: "Ask the Docs" Replies

Friday, October 18, 2013

You've got questions and we're here to dish out answers. Lot of great questions this week ranging from trade offers to starting decisions to wavier advice. We decided to go the Social Media route this year, so if you dropped us a question on our Twitter, Facebook, or Google+ pages, odds are good you got an answer! For the rest of you, we've compiled the questions and our responses to try to help the masses as well. Many of our replies will have components that are directly applicable to components on your team, so without further ado, let's get to it:

Here's my dilemma. My wanna be studs have all been duds and I'm far behind so I'm willing to take risk at this point. I need three pass catchers. I usually start J. Cameron no question, but ever since Hoyer got hurt I'm doubting him and it shows. Starting Mike Wallace, and the shaky as ever H. Nicks vs. poor pass D's, but I've got Steve Smith going against the Rams. Should I plug Smith in for Cameron? And I've got a solid starter in M. Forte, but R. Rice has been killing me, I'm over him. I've got L. Bell, and B. Powell. I know the rook is going against tough Ravens D, but I'm ready to go on a limb. And I'm a steeler fan, my pride is getting in the way!!
-Darwin, Facebook

Docs: Darwin, we stick with Cameron over Smith. Cameron's production has been down, but it hasn't been dead (albeit he got many of his catches in garbage time last week). At 6'5", Cameron is a much better red zone presence than Smith (5'9" - if that), and it shows. In fantasy, the all important TD is king, and Cameron brings a better TD presence to the table. Cameron can't post the monster game each week, but he CAN post the monster game, something that is a much lower probability with Smith. Even with the QB switch, more data is needed before doubting Cameron, who is a big talent on the CLE roster. As for RB, you are locked with Forte as you noted. We hear your frustrations with Rice, but he has been banged up and the Ravens offensive line is just not getting much push against opposing defensive lines. Even having said that, we still go with Rice this week. The Steelers defensive line is wet tissue paper this year. If Rice struggles this week, then you've got a couple of other options that can be leveraged with match-ups. But the match-up and talent this week is with Rice, and we would give him the start. Down the road, at least one rookie RB will emerge with a big season this year, and you've got your lottery ticket with Bell. He could be that rookie this year. If you haven't, be sure to check out our article on why rookie RBs are often fantasy gold: Fantasy Rookies

4 WRs, 2 open slots: Harry Douglas, Terrance Williams, Kendall Wright, DeAndre Hopkins. Who gets the start?
-Archit, Twitter

Docs: Archit, we go with Douglas (White & Jones OUT) and Williams (PHI is the best match-up for WR in NFL).

Need a RB, should I propose to trade Josh Gordon or Justin Blackmon for Giovanni Bernard?
-Hallie, Twitter

Docs: Hi Hallie, both WRs are hot right now & their value will keep going up. Would like to see more than GB. If can't, wait a week.

I'm in a PPR 12 team league -- looking for my 2nd receiver behind Calvin -- I have Reggie Wayne, Alshon Jeffery, Kendall Wright and Jacoby Jones. Reggie is my regular starter, but the Denver D is pretty stout (minus the 'Boys game). Leaning towards Alshon on this one, but looking for a second opinion.
-David, Facebook

Docs: David, we like Wayne and recommended him in our start / sit column this week. Statistically, Denver is actually the #3 most fantasy friendly defense for a fantasy WR to face (based on compiling performance of all fantasy WRs against all NFL teams through week 6). We see this being a shootout. Manning to remind the Colts of the good times from the past; Luck to remind the Colts of the good times to come. Wayne will benefit.

Need to start two out of the three, Trent Richardson, Giovani Bernard, and DeAngelo Williams.
-Josh, Facebook

Docs: Josh, we go with Bernard and Richardson this week. Here's our full list FootballDocs Weekly RB Rankings

What do you think of trading Demaryius Thomas for Ray Rice? Can Ray turn his season around?
-Rock, Twitter

Docs: Rock, we wouldn't do it. Manning too hot to give up Thomas. Rice has tough match-ups down the stretch vs D's that will improve.

What D should I start this week? Panthers or Lions???
-Andee, Twitter

Docs: Andeee, coin toss here. We lean slightly to DET. Opposing DL have been able to get pressure on CIN, which is a strength of DET.

Just traded James Jones & KC Def for CJ Spiller. Should I start him over Stevan Ridley vs Jets with shady being my other RB?
-Jeezy, Twitter

Docs: Jeezy, we would go with Spiller. Great match-up (MIA) and health seems fine. Jets very tough run D for Ridley (#32).

Graham on bye - Rudolph is available. How will he mesh w Freeman? Wright (TAM) has 12 receptions in last 2 games. Also Cook, Cumberland, and Celek? Help!
-Trevor, Twitter

Docs: Trevor, we go with Wright. Benefactor of QB change in TAM, and ATL is a good match-up for fantasy TEs.

I'm in a PPR league and have A.J Green, Calvin Johnson, Blackmon and Welker. Who do I sit? I can start 3.
-Eduany, Twitter

Docs: Eduany, this is honestly a coin toss. Splitting hairs here, but if we had to pick, we say Megatron is odd man out. The CIN secondary is physical, and Megatron is not 100%.

I'm in a 10 team PPR league, got a trade question, I've been offered Doug martin for Rob Gronkowski , I also have jordan Cameron and can onky use 1 TE would you do that trade?
-Stephen, Facebook

Docs: Stephen, run, don't walk to your computer and make that trade, particularly if you are in a keeper league. Cameron provides a nice option for you at TE, and Martin, who has been fairly decent, is a great RB that should improve as the year continues, particularly with the clubhouse cancer Freeman gone.

Andre Johnson or Ty Hilton, tough match up for Andre and he hasn't produced much. Ty Hilton has been seeing as many touches as Reggie Wayne so maybe some upside there.
-Ben, Facebook

Docs: Ben, we go with Hilton. Johnson just has too many question marks this week... the biggest being a complete switch at QB. No one really has any idea what that will yield for Johnson, good or bad. QB - WR chemistry is so very critical to a WR success. Meanwhile, Hilton does have upside with his match-up and a stable situation at QB. That's exactly why we snuck him in at #25 this week in our WR rankings: FootballDocs Weekly WR Rankings

That's a wrap this week. Great interacting with everyone and good luck to everyone's teams this week. If you haven't yet, be sure to check out our FootballDocs' Social Media pages and send us your fantasy football question: Google+, Facebook, and Twitter.
