NFL Week 17: "Ask the Docs" Replies

Friday, December 27, 2013

You've got questions and we're here to dish out answers. Lot of great questions this week ranging from trade offers to starting decisions to wavier advice. We decided to go the Social Media route this year, so if you dropped us a question on our Twitter, Facebook, or Google+ pages, odds are good you got an answer! For the rest of you, we've compiled the questions and our responses to try to help the masses as well. Many of our replies will have components that are directly applicable to components on your team, so without further ado, let's get to it:

Who should I start in the second week of my championship? Wilson, Cassel, Pryor, Fitzpatrick, Orton (on waivers). Thanks!
- John on Twitter

Docs: Hi John, Week 17 is always very tough. We go with Wilson, who is safest. But if VERY overmatched, toss the Hail Mary with Orton.

Hey docs, I have a week 17 free-for-all challenge where we start any team. PPR League: 1 QB, 2 WR, 2 RB, 1 TE, 1 Flex, 1 K, & 1 DST. I know the obvious plays based on ranking, but so does the rest of the league. I need the winning lineup that most people won't play. I've never won this in 12 years. Thanks!
- Brian on Facebook

Docs: Hi Brian, this can be tough as you don't want to overthink your way out of a title. We would lock in Foles at QB and the top 2 RBs for your league. We would also dial in Jimmy Graham at TE and Brandon Marshall at WR. That leaves the wildcards at WR#2 and Flex. WRs are very up and down anyway, so here is where you want to try to separate yourself a little from the pack, but don't get too crazy. We would give a long, hard look at Antonio Brown. Cleveland has really struggled in pass defense the past 4 weeks to opposing WRs, and Brown had Joe Haden's number in week 12. The Steelers have a lot to play for, and Brown will be a key part of their game plan. If you go with Brown at FLEX, then we probably dial in Josh Gordon as the other WR. That match-up is too good to leave on the table. A lot of folks will pick it, and you almost have to get it in there as a defensive move to cover in the event Gordon drops a nuke. Brown would be your x-factor that a lot of folks won't pick. At K we would give a shot with Prater in a very favorable kicker match-up against OAK with the added plus of Manning potentially getting benched and the offense stalling more than usual. At D, it's hard not to take the Saints playing at home against the Bucs. Hope that helps and good luck!

That's a wrap this week - wow. In 12 years of doing this in Week 17, this is by far the fewest questions... ever. That's a great sign as it shows most leagues are playing their title games in Week 16, which is a drum we have been beating for 12 years as well. There were some other posts that were not questions, which we did not include on this page, but we do appreciate all the kind comments. Thank you. Great interacting with everyone and good luck to everyone's teams this week.
