NFL Week 13: "Ask the Docs" Replies

Friday, November 30, 2012

You are running out of chances to make an impact on your regular fantasy season, or your playoffs have begun. Either way, it is time to make the tough decisions about adds, drops, trades, starts, and sits. There were so many great questions coming in this week. We couldn't get to them all, but we hope you still can gleam some good information from the ones we did answer. Join us for the Week 13 Ask the Docs mailbag.

"Torrey Smith against Pitt or Brian Hartline against NE at the wide receiver spot?"
-- Steve, Orlando, FL

Docs: We like Smith better in this scenario. He is a bigger talent and has been playing very well in 2012. The Steelers can be a tough defense, but we trust the Ravens' offense more than we do the Dolphins' offense.

"I'm in a PPR league with 3 WR, 2 RB, a QB, R/W, K, and Def. Who should I start out of the following: Jordy Nelson, Malcolm Floyd, Justin Blackmon, T.Y. Hilton, Donnie Avery, James Jones (GB), and Brandon LaFell are my WRs and Frank Gore, Marshawn Lynch, and Jaquizz Rodgers are my RBs. Right now I have Nelson, Floyd, and Blackmon WRs, Gore and Lynch as my RBs and J. Rodgers as my W/R. Should I make any changes? I need to win this week to make the playoffs. Thanks!"
-- Nate, Binghamton, NY

Docs: We like the decisions you have made this week. Hilton could end up outscoring some of your other options, but we think your other choices are just more reliable than Hilton.

"Eric Decker, Larry Fitzgerald, Dez Bryant, or Marques Colston. Pick 3.

Decker seems to have cooled off of his mid season form. Fitzgerald has been below average this year but he plays the Jets this week. Bryant is probably the most obvious starter out of this group. Colston is solid but they play Atlanta in the Georgia dome this week.

I'm only ahead in my league on points for, so it's imperative that I win this week."
-- Ben, Fredericksburg, Virginia

Docs: Bryant, Decker, and Colston in that order. Fitzgerald has just been terrible this year. It is really a shame to see him without a good QB to get him the ball.

"I have Marshawn Lynch, Frank Gore, Marcel Reece, and I recently acquired Bryce Brown. Due to Lynch's matchup against the Bears and their tough run D I'm in a tough situation on who to play. Who would be the best three to go with this week? My league is PPR and has bonuses for 100 yards and every 50 after 100."
-- Cole, Arma, KS

Docs: Lynch is your odd man out this week. We really like Brown, Reece, and Gore this week.

"Hey Docs, I've got a toss up at the flex spot this week between Aaron Hernandez @ Miami or Cecil Shorts @ Buffalo. Hernandez just came off an ankle injury with not much fantasy production last week and Shorts has put up good numbers the last three consecutive weeks. Also, not sure whether to bench San Francisco DEF @ St Louis or New England DEF @ Miami. What do you think? Thanks much guys!"
-- Casey, Chicago, Illiniois

Docs: With Hernandez still not looking 100%, we strongly recommend Shorts over him as a flex. Your defense will be best served with San Francisco. The Pats are playing well this year, but we don't think they will stumble into as many TDs as they did last week.

"Need a win to secure a bye in the first round.

Giants D or the Cardinals D?

Which WR? Amendola, Miles Austin, of Mike Williams (TB)?"
-- Matt, Charlotte, NC

Docs: Start the Cardinals. They get the Jets bungling offense this week. The Giants have to deal with RGIII. At WR, Austin should be a good option. Amendola isn't trustworthy right now. Mike Williams isn't a bad option, but we like Austin more with his matchup against the Eagles.

"Hello, I've got Harvin in as WR. Guessing he won't play so thinking I'll start Steve Smith and Stevie Johnson. My question is for my flex, Do you think I should start Greg Jennings or Beanie Wells? Thank you in advance for any advice."
-- Ben, Franklin, North Carolina

Docs: Beanie Wells. The Packers have too many good options at WR to risk Jennings right now. Jennings could play, but you can suspect that he will be on a limited number of snaps As such, we like the opportunity to take advantage of Wells being a goal line back at worst.

Thanks to all for the great questions! That's a wrap for this week. We tried to address some of the more common questions with more detailed answers to try to not only help the specific person asking the question, but the masses as well. Enjoy watching football this week and good luck to your fantasy teams!
