WRAP UP OF FANTASY FOOTBALL
START SIT WEEK 3
September 23, 2008
Nostradamus (a.k.a. psychic)
Start:
Roddy White, WR, ATL – White was one of the bright spots for the start calls of week 3. He had a big game with 199 yards receiving and a beautiful 70 yard TD strike. Bottom line: if you are one of the worst teams in the NFL, don’t mess with the Falcons at home. The good news is that the Falcons do play the Rams in Atlanta! The bad news is that you won’t get to take advantage of that game in your fantasy league because it will be in week 17. Doh!
J.T. O’Sullivan, QB, SF – O’Sullivan had a very solid game in week 3 as he lead the 49ers to a convincing victory over the Lions. 189 yards passing, 32 yards rushing, and 2 TDs with no turnovers made O’Sullivan a good start in most scoring systems. O’Sullivan will have more good days in the future, but he will also have his share of troubles as well. This just means that O’Sullivan’s fantasy owners will have to play the matchups for most of the season when it comes to the San Francisco signal caller.
Brett Favre, QB, NYJ – As a fantasy owner, you can almost always count on Brett Favre on Monday Night Football. Week 3 was no exception. Favre had 271 yards passing, 2 INTs, and 3 TD passes. If you are in a league that doesn’t penalize for INTs, Favre could be your man all season long. If your league does penalize for INTs, Favre is still a solid start most weeks.
Jerricho Cotchery, WR, NYJ – For those of you in point per reception leagues, the 10 receptions for 76 yards has to be a thing of beauty. This was another good day from Cotchery, as he continues to be a very valuable fantasy WR.
Bench:
Derrick Anderson, QB, CLE – Brady, Brady, BraaaADY! Do you think a career journeyman like Anderson hears the footsteps behind him? As predicted, Anderson was a huge flop again. With 3 INTs, only 125 yards, and 1 TD, Anderson shouldn’t even be smelling your lineup at this point. With him playing this poorly, it is only a matter of time before the Browns put the hometown kid in there. If the coaches lose with a young guy, they might get to keep their job. If they lose while leaving the “future” on the bench, those coaches won’t be part of that future.
DeAngelo Williams, RB, CAR – We called Jonathan Stewart the goal line back and predicted that Williams would have a down week. That is pretty much what happened. Stewart scored again, and Williams only managed 27 yards on 10 carries. Williams did have 17 yards receiving, but that didn’t help much.
Ahman Green, RB, HOU – Green ended up not playing, but Steve Slaton had a great game. Green’s days are numbered.
Farmer's Almanac (a.k.a. not so bad/not so good)
Start:
Chris Johnson, RB, TEN – Johnson had a solid game, but he only had 2 receptions and no TDs. Johnson almost made the good calls of the week considering how down the scoring was across the NFL. Johnson’s 79 total yards just weren’t enough to make the grade.
John Carlson, TE, SEA – For a TE, Carlson was aOK, but he really should have done more in this game. The problem was that the Seahawks just went with a ground assault that featured Julius Jones and OF ALL PEOPLE T.J. Duckett. The Seahwaks don’t play the Rams every week, so don’t over react to Duckett.
Bench:
None this week
Weather Forecast (a.k.a. oops better luck next time)
Start:
Jake Delhomme, QB, CAR – We will let the blood bath begin with the disappointing performance of Jake Delhomme. The Panthers just couldn’t keep the Vikings D at bay. Delhomme only had 191 yards and 2 fumbles. Delhomme needed a TD to make things respectable, but he just couldn’t get it going. Hopefully, week 4 will be better against the Falcons.
Bryant Johnson, WR, SF – This was a big surprise. Johnson only had 1 catch. J.T. O’Sullivan had a good day, but he was just spreading the ball around and that left Johnson on the short end of the stick.
Buffalo Bills, D – The Raiders played very mistake free football. We know! We couldn’t believe it either. The Bills D will bounce back, but this week they were a bit of a bust.
Eddie Royal, WR, DEN – Royal did get 4 catches, but the end results was very small in terms of total yardage. Royal looks like he will be little more than a weekly spot start depending on matchups unless something happens to Brandon Marshall.
Thomas Jones, RB, NYJ – Yikes! Jones had a bad week with only 54 total yards and a fumble. The Chargers really clamped down because they needed a win. Jones was a bust.
Sammy Morris, RB, NE – Why do we even bother with the Patriots RBs. The team acts like it doesn’t even know it has RBs half the time. We didn’t consider Morris a super start, but we hoped he would get some goal line work. That did happen and Morris was a bust.
Bench:
Amani Toomer, WR, NYG – 5 receptions for 64 is a pretty solid day in a PPR league. That made Toomer a decent start.
Chris Perry, RB, CIN – Perry got close to 100 total yards and he had a nice TD run. Those TDs will kill your sit call every week.
JaMarcus Russell, QB, OAK – WOW! Russell looked like a real live NFL QB against the Bills. This could mean good things for the Raiders, but we would like to see a lot more first. Rushing TDs always make QBs look a lot better to fantasy owners.
