Fantasy Football Start Sit

Our weekly "Who to Start and Sit" column is part of FootballDocs In-season content. All of FootballDocs In-season content is 100% free and starts September 5, 2012.

After starting your studs (typically players ranked after week 5 in the top ~15 RBs, top ~ 10 WRs, top ~ 10 QBs, top ~3 TEs, top ~5 Defenses, and top...wait, no kicker is a fantasy football stud), the Docs will help you decide who to start and sit as we recommend players in our fantasy football start sit column that are not clear studs and can step in with a big game for your team this week. Consequently, we will not recommend who to start and sit with the top few players at each position in our weekly fantasy football start sit advice (given starts every week); however, we may occasionally recommend players ranked 15 - 25 overall due to some teams out there that will have multiple players at one position in this range but can only start one.  If we recommend such a player it does not mean we think they are not a stud, we are just trying to help those folks out there that may be in such a situation. We also recommend players to bench, so our fantasy football start sit column is sometimes referred to as fantasy football start bench column. Additionally, we offer Fantasy Football Weekly Rankings to help even further with some of those more difficult start sit decisions. Last, be sure to check us out every Tuesday as we do a Wrap-up on our advice - both good and bad.  In fact, every wrap-up is kept and posted as a permanent, public record of what we called and how good or bad the calls were. Why?

Three reasons:

1.  Accountability.
2.  Confidence in our analysis and recommendations.
3.  Because the Docs take winning every bit as seriously as you do.

Give 'em the rock (a.k.a. Start)

Kevin Kolb, QB, ARZ - Kolb has been very effective as a NFL QB by winning the Cardinals first 3 games. Kolb is starting to feel his groove as a fantasy QB as well. He has faced several stout fantasy defenses, but things are looking up in Week 4. Kolb has the Dolphins and they are the 29th worst pass defense in the league.

Ryan Fitzpatrick, QB, BUF - Fitzpatrick has played pretty well, but he has also been a good fantasy option. This week he gets the Patriots. New England should be able to score enough points to keep Fitzpatrick throwing as the Bills try to keep pace. Without a healthy Spiller, Fitzpatrick should keep the ball in the air all game long.

Joe Flacco, QB, BAL - Flacco is hot and you've got to keep him in there. As an opposing defense, the Browns offer it all, TDs, yards, and vulnerability to the big play. Expect great things from Flacco in week 4.

Jacquizz Rodgers, RB, ATL - In a PPR league, this should be a slam dunk for a solid game as your flex player. Rodgers is playing one of the most putrid run defenses in the league. The Panthers have given more good games to fantasy backs than they have player games. Folk, they are terrible. Rodgers is starting to make an impact for the Falcons. His role is only going to increase.

BenJarvus Green-Ellis, RB, CIN - Jacksonville has had trouble stopping a wet sneeze. Look for Green-Ellis to have a strong week against a team that is struggling to slow down the run.

Cedric Benson, RB, GB - Benson has the worst run defense in the league in front of him, and the Packers are going to be looking to kick someone in the throat after the sleepwalking-in-Seattle-referees cost Green Bay the game. This will be a great game for desperate teams.

Vincent Jackson, WR, TB - Jackson has been up and down, but this week he gets a softball with the Redskins' secondary. Jackson should be a big help to many fantasy teams in Week 4.

Torrey Smith, WR, BAL - Smith has speed to burn, and he will pop another nice game against a Browns' secondary that has issues defending the big play.

Brandon Lloyd, WR, NE - Lloyd is starting to heat up and conditions are prime for a breakout week. Brady looks Lloyd's way early and often, and they are starting to get on the same page. Expect that chemistry to grow even further facing a Bills' secondary that is very vulnerable to pass plays over 20+ yards.

Owen Daniels, TE, HOU - Owen will be no lazy poop this week, and Momma can expect to get her toast. Daniels leads the Texans in targets, and he gets to tee-off against a very suspect Titans' pass defense in a key division game.

Let 'em warm up the pine (a.k.a. Sit)

Jay Cutler, QB, CHI - The Cowboys might sack Cutler 50 times this week. The Bears cannot pass protect and the Cowboys can pass rush. Sounds like a low fantasy week from this vantage point.

Sam Bradford, QB, STL - Bradford's only good week came against the Redskins, who have made any opposing QB look like a Pro-Bowler. This week he gets a Seattle defense that nullified Rodger's discount double check. Best to look elsewhere for your starting fantasy QB.

Chris Johnson, RB, TEN - Johnson has been a huge disappointment this year, and it won't get any better this week after criticizing his offense line and facing a run stuffing defense like the Texans.

Shonn Greene, RB, NYJ - If you have another decent option, we would avoid Greene because the 49ers D is no joke. Patrick Willis is a little banged up, but he is expected to play on Sunday. The 49ers should shut down the Jets' offense.

Brandon LaFell, WR, CAR - LaFell has been a sneaky play in the first two weeks of the season, but he fell back to earth in week 3. Things don't look much better in week 4 facing a Falcons' defense that will attack Cam Newton and confuse the young QB with disguised looks. The end result will be a tough day for LaFell. Could be a tough day for Steve Smith as well, but Smith always manages to get those junk yards in mop-up duty when the game is already out of reach.

Kenny Britt, WR, TEN - When healthy and playing, Britt has flashed some monster fantasy games in his past. However, he is not healthy this week no thanks to an ankle sprain, and he faces a very tough Texans defense that is going to give Locker fits. Toss in Locker's man crush on Nate Washington, and this is not the week to put Britt in your starting line-up.
