2008 Fantasy
Football Busts

Land Mines in your Fantasy Football Draft

A bad bust pick can definitely hamper your draft and put you squarely behind the eight-ball all season long, particularly if the pick involved an early round selection.  A "bust" is simply a pick that underperforms his anticipated 2008 value as perceived by the masses (Average Draft Position); however, just because a player is listed as a "bust" doesn't mean that player is undraftable.  There isn't a fantasy manager out there that isn’t willing to take a "chance" (sarcasm) on WR Wes Welker in their draft; however, by indicating Welker as a bust, we simply are recommending that you don't overpay for him and fall into a trap of seeing him listed high on other rankings.  We put a load of work into our analysis for our projected Busts and ultimately want to empower you with some of the reasoning behind our recommendations.  At the end of the day it is all about risk management.  These players bring high risk to the table and stand a better chance of not having as successful of a 2008 fantasy football season as their previous 2007 performance would indicate.

Vince Young, QB, Tennessee Titans - BUST
The Vince Young bus came screaming through in 2006, and everyone, including EA Sports, jumped on.  The darling of 2006, Young earned several accolades after that season, including NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year and cover-boy for the popular EA Sports Madden Football video game.  Everything was coming up roses for Young, and his 2006 season looked like it may prove to be a huge stepping stone to a much bigger season.  Well, it proved to be a huge stepping stone, but not for a big year on the football field.  Rather, it was a huge stepping stone for a big year in partying.  On more than one occasion, Young’s commitment to the team was called out, and Young did nothing to prove those accusations false.  On the contrary, his actions supported them… and continue to support them.  Most recently by enrolling in the University of Texas this past spring to finish his degree.  Naturally, folks in the Music City are not happy with Young’s lack of commitment to the franchise, and it is hard to imagine his coaching staff is thrilled either.  While it is an honorable thing to finish your degree, now is not the time for Young.  At only 25 years old, his time in the NFL is ticking, and Young needs to spend every minute he has learning the complexity of the NFL and getting better.  Particularly coming off a disappointing season where he threw nearly twice as many interceptions as TDs.  This is an indicator of immaturity and classic sign of a young QB needing to learn the NFL.  It can be a little difficult trying to improve when you are nearly 1,000 miles away from resources in Nashville that can and will make you better as a NFL quarterback.  The position of QB in the NFL demands that a player be dedicated to the sport and making himself better, and returning to school and partying it on up is not a way to do that.  As such, it is extremely difficult to envision Young having a breakout season, while it is much easier to see him producing more of the same from 2007 in 2008, if not a little worse.  The receiving core in TEN is not impressive, and Young did nothing in the spring to try to make him and his receivers better as a pass-catch unit.

What is a fantasy football "bust" pick?
A "bust" is a player that significantly underperforms their average draft position.  In short, if you are unfortunate enough to select a bad "busted" pick, you landed a player that yielded much lower production than otherwise anticipated prior to the NFL season (ref: RB Edgerrin James in 2006).  Consequently, you want to select any "busted picks" much later than their Average Draft Position (ADP).

What is "Average Draft Position"?
Average Draft Position is an indicator of when a player should be selected based on the average of hundreds of drafts completed by various fantasy football leagues and mock drafts.  For those that are interested, we provide links to sites that offer Average Draft Position (ADP) information for the 2008 fantasy football season.

How do you determine a "busted" player?
Well, there is a lot that goes into why one player has a higher probability of having a disasterous year than another.  The idea of this article is to bring some attention to certain players and list supporting facts as to why they make a strong case as a busted pick.  At the end of the day, it's your call.  We just want to empower you with some facts to consider when evaluating talent as possible busted picks for your fantasy football draft.
